Players from municipalities will take part in the games in Lusaka under the auspices of the Zambia Local Authorities Sports Association (Zalasa).
Zambia has been awarded the right to host the 2019 International Municipal Games in September. Players from municipalities will take part in the games in Lusaka under the auspices of the Zambia Local Authorities Sports Association (Zalasa).
This is an event which is held annually, where top municipal teams get to take part in different sporting codes and make their cities and provinces proud.
Desiree Manyane is the manager of Polokwane’s volleyball team and also one of the players who will be in action at the International Municipal Games.
The Polokwane Municipality’s volleyball team took part in the Inter-municipal Games in Gauteng two weeks ago, where they showed off their talent and proved that they are a force to be reckoned with. They played against the teams of seven other municipalities and ended the second.
They beat Mahikeng Municipality to secure their place in the final, where they lost by a few points against Steve Tshwete Municipality. Around 100 municipalities are expected to participate in the International Municipal Games this year. Besides volleyball, other sporting codes such as netball, soccer, athletics, chess, darts, swimming, fishing and table tennis will also be contested at the games.
Govendar Mohlahlana is part of the team.
Desiree Manyane, Polokwane volleyball team manager and player, says the team is training hard and is all set for the September games.
“We want to make the municipality and our province proud, bragging with some of the best players that we could possibly have.”
