Anthony Joshua latest victim of the 'Drake curse' after being pictured with rapper

Anthony Joshua lost his first professional fight last night after he was knocked down in the seventh by Ruiz Jr just weeks after vowing to beat the phenomenon sweeping social media.

The curse is a growing trend of teams or athletes supported and pictured with the popular Canadian rapper going on to lose a big event. Joshua joins the ranks of other defeated victims including Conor McGregor, who was joined on stage with the star before his scrap with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

It comes despite AJ posting a cocky image on his Instagram page of himself with Drake vowing to come through unscathed, captioning the shot: “Bout to break the curse.”

Joshua said his opponent simply for the better of him on the night, but boxing fans have been quick to point out the effect Drake is having.

One fan wrote: "OMG I can’t believe this!! The curse is real!!@"

Another joked: "Yooooo Drake you are a curse".

Another chimed in: "The #DrakeCurse has seriously reached Final Destination levels of inevitability. It may not get you today, tomorrow, or your immediate fight... But it will get you in the end!"

The curse has swept across several sports, with football side PSG suffering their heaviest league defeat in five years earlier last season after being snapped with the Hotline Bling singer.

Joshua was floored four times before the referee decided enough was enough. Speaking to ESPN about whether he would have Drake backstage, the 29-year-old said: "I know I shouldn’t.

"You know about the Drake curse? It’s real though.

"This is what I’m saying, what’s weird though is I took a picture with Drake.

"We took it before (Jarrell) Miller got banned. Miller then had a drug test and got popped. The fight got cancelled!"

Bookies had Joshua as 1-25 favourite going into the scrap last night, with 22 wins - 21 by knockout. He will now join the likes of Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson as dominant champions to suffer losses which shocked the sport.
